Paphos-Limassol motorway tunnel to close in one direction at a time for two weeks
Police say the Limassol-bound tunnel closes daily from 8am to 7pm on 9-13 November, then the Paphos-bound tunnel on 16-20 November, with traffic running both ways through the open tunnel.
The tunnel on the Paphos-Limassol motorway will close in one direction at a time for ten weekdays this month while maintenance work is carried out, police said on Friday.
From Monday 9 to Friday 13 November, the Limassol-bound tunnel will be closed. Traffic in both directions will use the Paphos-bound tunnel.
From Monday 16 to Friday 20 November, the Paphos-bound tunnel will be closed. Traffic in both directions will use the Limassol-bound tunnel.
Work will run from 8am to 7pm on each of the ten days. At 7pm the closed tunnel will reopen to traffic until work resumes at 8am the next morning.
The notice gives no closures for the weekends of 14-15 November and 21-22 November, when both tunnels should be available.
Police advice
Police urged drivers to keep to a safe, low speed, leave a safe distance from the vehicle in front and follow the temporary road signs in the works area.
The A6 is the motorway link between the two cities. The closure will affect journeys between Paphos and Limassol, and the open tunnel will carry traffic in both directions.
Drivers who normally use the tunnel at peak times should allow extra time, particularly on the first morning of each closure.
The police announcement does not estimate how long delays might be, say whether officers will direct traffic at the tunnel mouths, or describe the maintenance being done. It also does not say how much the work will cost or which contractor is carrying it out.
It does not say whether the schedule would change in bad weather or whether further closures will follow after 20 November.
What happens next
The work is due to finish on the evening of Friday 20 November. The notice does not say whether more maintenance is planned on the tunnel later in the winter.
