Two remanded over alleged attempted murder in Paphos
Paphos District Court ordered a 22-year-old and a 28-year-old held for six days. A 74-year-old man told police a driver tried to hit him with a car and that two people then threw chairs at him.
Paphos District Court ordered two people, aged 22 and 28, to be held for six days on Friday while police investigate an alleged attempted murder and acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm in the town.
The case was reported by a 74-year-old Paphos resident. According to the account he gave police, he was outside a block of flats at about 4pm on Wednesday 4 November when an unknown driver tried to hit him with a car but missed.
The driver then allegedly drove into the man’s car on purpose, damaging it, before leaving the scene.
Two people then approached and threw chairs at him, the man told police. He said he was injured in the legs, back and head.
He went to Paphos General Hospital, where he was found to have a haematoma on the back of his head, a broken nose and abrasions to his legs. He stayed in for treatment and was discharged on Thursday.
The two allegations
Police are investigating the incident under two headings. The first is attempted murder, arising from the account that the driver tried to run the man down and then rammed his car. The second is acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, arising from the chairs thrown at him afterwards.
The police announcement does not say whether the driver is one of the two people arrested. It describes the driver and the two people who threw the chairs as unknown at the time of the complaint.
The arrests
Police said evidence emerged against the two suspects during the investigation. Officers arrested them on Thursday under court warrants and held them for questioning.
The two appeared before Paphos District Court on Friday morning. The court issued a six-day remand order, allowing police to keep them in custody while inquiries continue.
Paphos CID is continuing the investigation. The force has not said whether it is looking for anyone else in connection with either part of the incident.
What is not known
Police have not said what evidence led to the arrests, whether the two have responded to the allegations, or what charges they may face. No charges have been announced.
The two have not been named. Under Cypriot law they are presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise, and a remand order is not a finding of guilt.
It is also not known whether the man knew the people involved, whether the incident followed an earlier dispute, or whether the car used in the alleged attack has been recovered.
What happens next
The order allows police to keep the two in custody for six days. Any further detention would need another court decision.
If investigators assemble enough evidence, any charges would be brought in court and would have to be proved.
Anyone with information about the incident can contact the police emergency line on 112.
