The United Nations in Cyprus said on Thursday that María Ángela Holguín, the Secretary-General’s personal envoy, will host President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman for a trilateral meeting on Monday 9 November.

The meeting will take place at 11am at the residence of the Head of Mission, inside the UN Protected Area in Nicosia, according to the UN statement as reported by Cyprus Mail, Philenews and Politis.

The announcement came after Christodoulides spoke about the process earlier on Thursday. He said he had spoken to Holguin by telephone that morning and that, based on the information available so far, the process appeared to point towards positive developments.

He said the sides were at the stage of waiting for final answers. He added that Holguin had told him specific announcements might be made over the weekend.

The president said the UN Secretary-General was being kept continuously informed. He said he hoped there would be positive developments to announce, based on what the envoy had told him.

Asked whether the expected developments concerned the opening of additional crossing points, Christodoulides said the discussion was broader. He said the effort launched after the Secretary-General’s visit to Cyprus covered methodology, substance and confidence-building measures.

What is not known

The UN statement confirms the date, time and place. It does not set out an agenda, name the issues to be discussed, or say whether the three will make a joint statement afterwards.

It is also not clear what announcements the president was referring to. He did not specify them, and the UN statement gave no further detail.

Why it matters

Cyprus remains divided and peace talks have continued to stall, as UNFICYP describes the current situation. The UN has not described Monday’s meeting as a negotiation round and has not said it will produce an agreement.

For residents, the practical questions are whether the contacts lead to a new crossing point or to a resumption of formal talks. Neither is confirmed.
