Police arrested 12 people overnight for offences including illegal residence in Cyprus, malicious damage and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to a report published on Friday morning.

Officers stopped 415 vehicles and checked the drivers and 155 passengers. The checks produced 261 reports, of which 78 concerned speeding and two concerned drink driving. Six vehicles were impounded.

Police also searched 32 premises and filed four reports as a result, the report says.

What the numbers show

Traffic checks accounted for most of the activity. The 78 speeding reports were the largest single category in the summary, followed by two drink-driving reports. The remaining reports covered other traffic offences, but the summary did not break them down.

The 12 arrests covered a mix of offences rather than one case. Police listed illegal residence in the Republic, malicious damage and conspiracy to commit a crime among the reasons for the detentions. The report did not say how many people were arrested for each offence.

What is not known

The report did not say in which districts the arrests or checks took place. It did not name the people arrested, give their ages or say whether they appeared in court on Friday. It also did not say how many remained in custody when the results were published.

An arrest is not a conviction. The people detained have not been charged in public, and no court has tested the allegations.

A familiar pattern

The operation follows a similar overnight effort on 2 November, when police reported 17 arrests, 644 vehicles stopped, 862 people checked and 405 traffic reports. That operation also included 37 premises inspections and nine impounded vehicles.

The figures are similar in scale, but each report describes one night separately and does not combine the results into a monthly total. The reports also do not say whether the same officers or units took part in both operations.

Why it matters

Overnight operations of this kind produce a large volume of paperwork in a short period: 261 reports from 415 vehicle stops, plus four reports from 32 premises searches. For drivers, the practical effect is a higher chance of a roadside check at night and a report for speeding or drink driving. The six impounded vehicles show that some stops went beyond a fine.

The figures describe one night of police activity. They are not a measure of crime in Cyprus or of whether crime is rising. The report gives the results of the operation, not a trend.
